How we work

Sources

Every figure, date and quote in an analysis is checked against its sources before publication, and the sources are listed under the article. We prefer primary sources: governments, international organisations and official statistics, then wire services and established newspapers. Where the sides disagree, we say who claims what instead of picking a version.

Facts with a date

Each analysis states the date its facts were checked. We don’t rewrite an analysis every time events move, but we update it when the picture changes, and we correct mistakes.

Fairness and wording

We set out the interests and the strategy of every side. On disputed territory we use the names in common international use and say that the territory is disputed. We don’t show graphic images of violence.

Corrections
